Prior to January 2018, US domestic recyclers had a market for unsorted, low value recyclables in China. Recently, China has cut back on the materials it will accept, which has highlighted the issue of material contamination.
Co-mingled recycling has increased participation in recycling programs nationwide. However, these co-mingled streams need clean, high quality materials in order to be successful. Contamination worsens when well-meaning residents put non-recyclable items in their recycling cart because they were not provided clear education.
The Town of Rolesville is partnering with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to help educate residents to recycle only those materials that truly belong in recycling containers. North Carolinians love to recycle, and with the right information, doing so will be easier than ever.
