Town of Rolesville Proclaims October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Community Planning Month

The Town of Rolesville's Board of Commissioners approved two proclamations at the October 8, 2024, meeting.

The first proclaims October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2024, more than 12,700 women in North Carolina are expected to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Over 1,500 likely will die from the disease. It is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in North Carolina. The Town encourages all women to get routine mammogram screenings and follow-up testing.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services offers free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible uninsured or underinsured women through the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries. Betty Ford, wife of former president Gerald Ford and breast cancer survivor, helped kick off the event.

The Board also proclaimed October as Community Planning Month. Through design, policy, and community projects, planners work to maximize community members' health, safety, and economic well-being. Planners aim to create thriving communities that support a high quality of life. The Town of Rolesville would like to publicly recognize the participation and dedication of appointed planning board members as well as our dedicated employees who work tirelessly for the Town.

National Community Planning Month was established in 2006 by the American Planning Association.
