YOUTH & TEEN CLASSES

Ballet & Jazz* – Ballet: An introduction to ballet with beginning development of ballet concepts including turn out, coordination, spatial awareness and a specific focus on class etiquette. Students will begin positions of the feet, and introductory movement vocabulary. The goal of this beginner Ballet class is to impart the fundamentals of classical ballet. Class will focus on basic ballet technique, proper body alignment, French terminology and musicality.  Jazz: This class will focus on learning proper jazz technique such as isolations of the body, stretching, progressions, improving energy and endurance as well as working on combinations in various jazz styles.

Ages: 5 – 8 years

Beginner’s Photography* -Did you get a new camera as a present or are planning to buy one? Confused about all those buttons and things like F-Stop, shutter speed, ISO, white balance and the like? This beginner’s class will help with all of that and allow you to get that camera off of automatic and take the photograph you would like instead of what the camera thinks you want. There will be an emphasis on shooting outdoors and we will have some practice. So, bring a lunch and learn how to use that camera!

Ages: 13 years and up

Beginner’s Sewing* – Do you want to learn to sew? Become familiar with the basics of sewing including vocabulary, necessary supplies, basic stitches, and operating your machine. During this class students will complete 2 projects including a pillowcase and a tote bag. Use your new sewing skills to make gifts and crafts for others!

Chess (Beginner)* – This is an introduction to chess class designed for novices.   We will have fun learning how pieces move, the 3 special moves, and the difference between check and checkmate. This class meets at 105 – A W. Young Street.

Creative Writing for Young Adults* – An introduction to the craft of creative writing for young writers. This class will examine writing techniques and tools essential to effective writing and editing for young adults   including narrative, character, scene, and dialogue, as well as the habits that are necessary to grow as a writer. This class meets at 105 – A W. Little Medical School* – At Little Medical School®, we understand kids love to dress up and play doctor. Through interactive learning, kids will discover how the body and organs work, how to use medical instruments, administer first aid and even tie knots like a real surgeon. Each child will receive a working stethoscope to take home and a diploma as a graduate of the Little Medical School® after completion of the course.

Little Veterinarian School* – Little Veterinarian School® encourages elementary school children to role play and explore the exciting world of veterinarians. Using interactive demonstrations, crafts and games, kids learn how to take care of a pet and use instruments that real veterinarians use.

Mad Science* – The Mission of Mad Science of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children through fun, hands-on science programs that instill a clear understanding of what science is really about and how it affects the world around them. Mad Science makes learning fun! Children will learn how to explore, question and test their theories. Through unique experiments and dazzling demonstrations we hope to inspire young people to explore the world around them, and possibly pursue careers in technology, science or engineering.

Forces of Science: Through the course of Forces of Science, children will play engineer, chemist—and stunt pilot! Students will investigate physics fundamentals and bring their scientific minds to basic magic tricks. Your Mad Scientists will be shocked by what they learn! Topics include forces, electricity, flight, structures, air pressure and more. All classes include a take home item relating to the program’s content.

NASA -Academy of Future Space Explorers: Take a voyage of discovery into the atmosphere and beyond! Explore planets, moons and other space phenomena in our solar system. Discover the difficulties of space travel, the  challenges of living in space and try assembling a satellite while training to be an astronaut.  Students will have lots of projects to make and to take home, plus – Mad Science is the ONLY organization licensed to use these activities for summer camps and school programs. All material developed by Mad Science and NASA.

School’s Out Program* – Is your child out of school, but you still have to work?  Then our School’s Out Program is the answer!  The program will run from 7:30 am – 6:00 pm and will focus on active and passive recreational games/activities, arts and crafts, enrichment experiences and so much more!  Please remember to pack a lunch, 2 snacks, drinks, and a change of clothes (if necessary) for you child.

Yoga Flow*– Yoga Flow focuses on the essential practice of yoga with one breath and one movement. This class is open to all levels and it strengthens and stretches out the full body within an hour. Participants will learn the basic postures of Yoga, but will also be given built-up challenge poses to help strengthen the arms, legs, and core. Yoga Flow is perfect for individuals who want to try something new with lots of energy and find peace by the end of class! This class meets at 105 – A W. Young Street.

Zumba – We take the “work” out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you’ll see why Zumba® Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise.  We also do Zumba Toning within the workout.  It adds in light weights to the workout – no more than 5 pound weights are used.

Ages: 13 years and up
Fee: $5 per class or $25 for a 6 class pass
